Biographical Literature of Seventeenth Century
|
Description |
Biographical literature, more than the Biography proper, has a wider appeal and contains elements of history as well. Besides reading about the biography of learned personages of the specified period, one learns a lot about the history and social circumstances of the period in a biographical literature. This genre of literature in Punjabi began in the seventeenth century in the form of Janamsakhis. The tradition of Janamsakhi in Punjabi contains biographies of Guru Nanak, the legends and miracles, myths associated with Guru Nanak as well as the socio-cultural scenario of seventeenth century Punjab. It uses literary devices of imagery, pictorial description and myth making and mystical symbols. This research dissertation analyses the contents of Janamsakhis and evaluates it as a genre of literary writing. The dissertation is well-researched and well-documented[edit]
