Despatches and General Orders

Description The tragic fall of the Sikh empire within less than a decade from the demise of Maharaja Ranjit Singh after the four Anglo-Sikh wars between the East India Company's forces and the Sikh army - is, perhaps, the saddest chapter in the entire Sikh history. The Sikhs lost these battles, despite their legendary military skill, due to the treacherous role played by their Dogra generals. This volume contains the secret military dispatches by the British military commanders and civil Governor, General of India to the East India Company's headquarters in England about the day to day account of battles fought between December 1845 and Feb. 1846. It gives a detailed account of the casualties and other gains and losses during the four Anglo Sikh wars. It makes a painful reading as one reads about the Sikh defeat, surrender of Sikh forces and Sikh abdication of power to the British. These dispatches also reveal the enduring qualities of the British character.[edit]
