This is a reprint of an article published in the Sunday issue of "The Hindustan Times" dated October 4, 1981. This article traces the genesis and evolution of the Sikh demand for an independent state of Khalistan in the 1980s in Punjab. Written in a completely objective and impartial manner, it squarely blames the congress leaders and the whole of Indian state for going back from the "solemn pledges" made to the Sikh before India's independence and partition. It holds the congress & Indian state responsible for bringing the Sikhs to adopt such extremist postures and large scale violence and bloodshed. It records every act of betrayal and discrimination against the Sikhs before and after India's independence and cause for Sikh violence[edit]
