|
Description |
One of the greatest martyrs, Baba Deep Singh 'Shaheed' has been a contemporary of Guru Gobind Singh, Bhai Mani Singh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and Nawab Kapur Singh. Being well-versed both in Sikh religious and spiritual lore as well as in martial arts, he was an accomplished Sikh scholar, preacher as well an indomitable warrior. He not only prepared four copies of Guru Granth Sahib in his own hand but also took part in all the major battles against the Mughals like the final battle at Anandpur, Chotta Ghallughara, and battle against Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1757. Remaining celibate, he devoted his entire life to the Sikh cause. After being a chief of Shaheed Misl, Jathedar of one of the contingents of Taruna Dal and founder of Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal, he finally sacrificed his life in 1757 while fighting against forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali. He kept fighting despite being severally wounded in neck and breathed his last only after entering Sri Darbar Sahib's premises.[edit]
